First Fridays Long Beach
The mission of First Fridays is to promote and support local artists and musicians by providing them with an outlet to showcase their work. Every first Friday night of the month, participating Bixby Knolls businesses will unite to promote local artists and musicians through extended operating hours. In doing so we hope to encourage a dialogue between businesses, artists and the community.
We want people to walk, talk, look, discover and experience the Knolls.
First Fridays is what you bring to it. First Fridays is what you take from it.
Help transform Atlantic Avenue into Art-lantic Avenue.
Anything goes.
“Music makes the people come together…yeah!” First Fridays on September 3 will help make the end of summer easier to accept with live art and a great mix of music all along Art-Lantic Avenue; from mandolin to Potential Lunatics and from Dixieland to bebop, Timstrument, and Timbreline.
September features: Justin Rudd’s “Say Cheese Long Beach!’ photo contest winners, folklorico performances, galleries, live theater, Pink Floyd on vinyl, Andy Street Youth Ambassador art display, kids crafts and art activities, Bixby Rollerettes, “Back to School” exhibit at the Historical Society featuring Poly vs. Jordan, “back to school bangs & ponytails,” Michelle Mangione’s Songwriter’s Showcase, 8th district council office’s own Linda Ivers photo exhibit, the Knolls Ranger, and an extra helping of the unexpected.
First Fridays continues to blur the lines between artist and attendee with the "interactive" elements now in place. Contribute to "Poetry Box" where you can submit a poem using Bixby Knolls as the inspiration. This includes musings, rusings, reminiscings, wives' tales, lore, mysteries, histories, stories, testimonies, confessions, and secrets.
Attendees are also encouraged to bring something to stick on the "Leave Something Behind" collage. Post a penny, photo, leaf, hair pin, cuff link, heirloom, or anything in your pocket to create a unique abstract collection. Also, bring your creativity for our community art piece where you pick up the pen and draw, sign your name, or leave your mark.
Stop by the First Fridays Information Table from 6:30pm - 8pm, located on the northwest corner of Bixby & Atlantic Ave, where you'll find info about First Fridays, maps, business info, and restaurant recommendations.
When the businesses start to close, "First Fridays After Hours" begins. Nino's Italian Restaurant will feature live artists, the mind-blowing bebop sounds of Majic Bullet Theory (experience the intensity of Dave Williams who just has to be channeling Miles Davis when he blows his horn) and community tables to “drink and draw.”The Factory also goes late into the night showcasing local talent with its Open Mic and welcomes all poets, preachers, politicians, pundits, singers, screenwriters, soothsayers, scribers, talkers, and thinkers to get up and express themselves. Why go home early? Stay out late and continue the energy.
Dine on Art-Lantic Avenue at one of our tasty restaurants then grab the Big Red Bus that will transport you venue to venue from designated stops at the participating businesses.
