First Fridays New Years Edition


Bixby Knolls is ringing in the new year with lots of fun First Fridays activities! Lets start the new year off right with music, art, and community! ff-jan-6

  • Start your night early at the Michelle Obama Library at 5:30p with Unplugged Poetry then catch the bus for FREE while enjoying even more poetry on your ride down to Bixby Knolls!
  • Expo Arts Center is the cultural hub of First Fridays and will showcase many multidisciplinary forms of arts to get your creative juices flowing.
    • The main room will have over 30 different artists with various styles from fine art to photography to animation!
    • The north room will feature over a dozen photographs by local photographer, Nash Jacquez.
    • Toaster Music and Connie Ericson have curated two amazing shows in the north and south galleries. The north gallery will feature music by Toaster Music with digital artist Mike Gustus, and dance by Maha & Co. The south gallery will feature art Brandon Mudrano and Johnathan Hunt!
    • The Back Room Theatre will host the First Fridays “Never Speak” poets.toaster-and-the-mayor
  • Arts & Services for the Disabled will have an exhibit at 612 E. Carson displaying new paintings and drawings by some very amazing artists.
  • Bixby Knolls is proud to welcome Smog City Brewery and Steelhead Coffee Shop to Bixby Road and Long Beach Boulevard inside SteelCraft! Stop by to perk up or chill out!
  • First Books is back at Pixie Toys for 2017! Story time starts at 6pm.
  • Stop by Jammin’ Music for their monthly student showcase and jam session!
  • Pop into the First Fridays Night Market at Bixby and Atlantic. The market features artisan crafters, live music by John Dean, and tasty treats provided by Robert Earls and much more!
  • Grab a refreshment from Mary the Mixologist while shopping the 50% OFF First Fridays sale at Trance on Atlantic!
  • Get into the 2017 groove with dance classes at Elise’s Tea Room on Friday night! Classes are from 7pm-9pm and space is limited so get there early!
  • Free Spirit Yoga will celebrate 15 great year in Bixby Knolls with art, treats, and beats by DJ Eusebio Akasa. vinyl
  • Have something on your mind? Join Sidewalk Talk during First Fridays at Carson and Atlantic Avenue. They are non profit organization specializing in simply listening while you talk.
  • It might be cold outside but there is always room for Long Beach Creamery and Twig & Willow is hosting! Also, don’t forget to browse the final days of the Twig & Willow winter sale with 30%-50% off items!
  • Stop by The Historical Society of Long Beach to see their newest exhibit during First Fridays honoring the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Using photos, newspapers, items from its collection and others collected from the community, it will commemorate this important anniversary of the event that torpedoed the United States into the Second World War. Music will be provided by the BD Jazz Duo.
  • Stop by the Cielo Photography and First Fridays Fotobooth inside Expo to get your picture taken!
  • The Homeland Cultural Center will be pop locking with the help of Dubs One spinning all the best hip-hop and R&B and the First Fridays spray crew providing the art on 3939 North.
  • Drop into the Allery for its 7th art installation. This round features artist Daniel Echeveria. Also in the allery, DJ Bix will turn all the funk hits.

  • Special musical guests for the month: The Joy Pond at DRNK, Vanessa Mardueno at Aura Thai/Bella Pizza, Rosemary Lowe at About U, BD Jazz Duo at Historical Society of Long Beach.
  • First Fridays favorites are back such as Majic Bullet Theory at Ground Control, Kelly Fitzpatrick at EJ Malloys, Hedgehog Swing at Coffee Bean,  DJ Eusebio Akasa at Free Spirit Yoga, DJ Bix in the Allery, Tony Ybarra at Wilmore Wine Bar, The Funny Valentines at West Bistro, Toaster Music in Expo Arts Center, and Hot Club at Georgie’s Place.

When the businesses start to close, “First Fridays After Hours” begins. Weiland Brewery, Rasslebock, Willmore, The 4262, and EJ Malloy’s go late into the night with food, drinks, and music. Why go home early? Stay out late and continue the energy Dine on Art-Lantic Avenue at one of our tasty restaurants then grab the trolley that will transport you venue to venue from designated stops at the participating businesses.
