First Fridays Mardi Gras

Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler! On March 3 the good times are rolling once again in Bixby Knolls for our annual First Fridays Mardi Gras celebration!Mardi Gras 3 (1) The night will be filled with beads, beats, and beignets!

  • Be on the look out for the parade which will take off from Georgie’s Place at 7pm sharp lead by our cast of characters including the king and queen of Mardi Gras, Luis Navarro and Dina Amadril, Ole the LBCC Viking, Baskin Robbins mascot, and Sea Funk Brass Band, to name a few!
  • The Expo Arts Center will once again be filled with the best and brightest in art, dance, and animation.
    • The main room will have over 30 artists from FA4 Collective, Squeeze Art Collective, CSULB Animation Departments, and much more!
    • In the North Gallery, Long Beach based artist Kellie Thomas Walker will be exhibiting new large scale paintings from her Geisha series, which feature both brush and pallet knife work. This exhibit is curated by Sumako. Toaster Music will be performing three sets of it’s own unique brand of improvised electronic music, at 7, 8 and 9 pm. They will be joined by the wonderfully talented dancers of Maha and Company, led by Maha Afra.
    • In the South Gallery, we will be presenting a group show curated by Connie Erikson. We’ll have some old favorites, including Alex Diffin and Heather Proctor. We’re also very excited to welcome Haylee McFarland, Chalavie, and Asia Morris to the space.beignet
  • Help Avery Boo Arts celebrate its 8th Year in Bixby Knolls! Stop in early to make Mardi Gras necklaces for the festivities!
  • Unplugged in the Bus is on its 4th trip during this First Fridays! Enjoy poetry, music, and story telling on your way to the festivities from the Michelle Obama Library! Festivities starts at 5pm!
  • Join First Books at Pixie Toys during First Fridays! Story time starts at 6pm!
  • Twig & Willow will celebrate Mardi Gras with beads, masks, Long Beach Creamery, face painting, and Porty the FotoBus!
  • Free Spirit Yoga will feature an art exhibit by Lily Rose and beats by Eusebio Akasa.
  • Drop into the Allery for our most recent art installation by the very talented, Jay Blaine.  Beats will be provided by DJ Bix!
  • The Better Half Boutique will give away beads, Mardi Gras candy, noise makers and $5 off of any $50 purchase!
  • Jump, run, and hop to earn Mardi Gras beads at Recreational Fitness.
  • Drop the kids off at Digital Revolution for their First Fridays Mine Craft work shop for only $25! Spaces are limited.
  • Learn to dance with trained salsa dancers at Elise’s Tea Room for their monthly First Fridays dance party.
  • Rick Wickeds will host artist, Violet, and beats by JusTodd!king and queen March 2017
  • There will be plenty of southern inspired treats for the night including hurricanes at EJ Malloy’s, Mardi Gras flavors by Long Beach Creamery, and beignets from The Beignet Truck!
  • Stroll through the First Fridays Market and discover the new Bixby Trading Post, formally where Clover was located, near Bixby and Atlantic.
  • Stop into Jammin Music for their monthly student showcase at 6:30 and jam session at 8pm.
  • FREE parking at the Bixby Business Center on the corner of Atlantic and San Antonio.
  • Special guest entertainment for the month: Big Butter Jazz Band at The Rivera Group, Brian Young and the Blues Station  at DRNKJohn Surge and the Haymakers at Aura Thai/ Bella Pizza, Lafayette Ben Charlatan at Wilmore Wine Bar,  Sam Ross Trio at Historical Society of Long Beach, Eusebio Akasa at Free Spirit Yoga, John Dean at The Bixby Trading Post, Hearts Like Lions at Long Beach Clothing, and SEA FUNK BRASS BAND leading the Mardi Gras Parade!
  • First Fridays favorites are back such as Majic Bullet Theory at Ground Control, Hedgehog Swing at Coffee Bean, DJ Phil at 3939 North, DJ Bill at SteelCraft, and Hot Club at Georgie’s Place.hedgehog swing 2
  • The Homeland Cultural Center will be pop locking with the help of DJ Phil spinning all the best hip-hop and R&B and the First Fridays spray crew providing the art on 3939 North.
  • Get your vinyl fix with the Record Truck!

When the businesses start to close, “First Fridays After Hours” begins. Rasselbock, Weiland Brewery, Willmore, Lola’sThe 4262, and EJ Malloy’s go late into the night with food, drinks, and music. Why go home early? Stay out late and continue the energy Dine on Art-Lantic Avenue at one of our tasty restaurants then grab the trolley that will transport you venue to venue from designated stops at the participating businesses.
