First Fridays ArtOber

October is National Arts and Humanities Month and in Bixby Knolls we strive to provide a well rounded artist experience to our community during ff-oct-7First Fridays. On October 7 we will feature art, music, dance, tech, photography, theatre, and much more to showcase the many creative disciplines our city has to offer.

  • First Fridays is proud to host some of our greatest arts organizations in Long Beach including LB Opera, Arts & Services for the Disabled, HeArtsy Comprehensive Development Program, Squeeze Art Collective, and FA4 Collective. Stop by the Expo and talk to them about all the great things they have going on!
  • The Kids Theatre Company will perform a very special flash mob of West Side Story out on ArtLantic! Keep an eye out!
  • MOVE will perform the Fleetwood Mac classic album, Rumours, at Ground Control.
  • Face Painting Stations: Pixie Toys, Twig & Willow and Esquire Barber Shop
  • Photo Stations: TALB, Secrets of the Islands
  • Celebrate Recreational Fitness’ 1 year anniversary with games and giveaways!
  • October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Stop by Salon Medusa for their annual fundraiser complete with pink hair paint station and pink ribbons!
  • Secrets of the Island will provide a FREE lei after each 10 minute chair massage and an opportunity to pose with their mascot, PUNCHIE the Pineapple!
  • Senator Ricardo Lara invites the community to his open house at 3939 Atlantic. There will be a meet and greet, food, and music!
  • TALB has partnered with Women’s Shelter of Long Beach to hold a vigil  for Domestic Violence Awareness Month starting at 5:30p. Guest galacticaspeakers will include Mayor Robert Garcia and Councilmember Al Austin. Beginning at 6p TALB will host a resource fair with lots of art, crafts, and family friends activities!
  • Gerrie Schipske will be signing her new book “Historic Cemeteries of Long Beach” and making a presentation at 7:00 pm at the Historical Society of Long Beach.
  • Drop into the Allery for its 6th art installation. This round features artists from FA4 Collective: Jeff Dulla, Romina Del Castillo, Liz C’ranza, and Gloria Sanchez have re-created desertscapes from Joshua Tree National Park. The allery install kicked off their artist residency in partnership with Joshua Tree National Park and Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts. Also in the allery, DJ Bix will be spinning the hits.
  • The Expo Art Center is packed with art and activities!
    • The main room will have over 30 different artists with various styles from fine art to photography to animation!
    • The north room will feature over a dozen works from Arts and Services for the Disabled.
    • Toaster Music and Connie Ericson have curated two amazing shows in the north and south galleries. The north gallery will feature music by Toaster Music with guest artist BL Singelton, and dance by Maha & Co. The south gallery will feature art by Joy Shannon, Ben Gallegos, Edrok One, and Roshi!
    • The Back Room Theatre will host the First Fridays “Never Speak” poets.
  • Drop the kids off at Digital Revolution for their First Fridays Minecraft work shop for only $25! Spaces are limited.
  • Long Beach Clothing will be buzzing with the sounds of local rock bands Perro Bravo and Life and Hard Times of MDC. Music starts at 7pm!
  • The Better Half Boutique will host a “Paint a Pumpkin” station in honor of ArtOber!
  • Help AndyLiz celebrate 4 great years in Bixby Knolls with 25% off their entire store!
  • Twig & Willow has curated a fun night inside and outside of the shop. Inside they will host Debbie Maher’s handmade dreamcatchers + THALKEN by Hana Lash jewelry trunk show . Outside they will offer ice cream from Long Beach Creamery and face painting by Lizbeth. DJ Bill will be spinning tunes all night!
  • The newest public art addition is finished on the corner of Atlantic and San Antonio thanks to the hard work of Noel Madrid, Tracy Negrete, and the famous Bixby Knolls architect, Don Gibbs!
  • Pop into the Kids Craft Zone at Oh Very Young at their new location at 3803 Atlantic Avenue!
  • The Homeland Cultural Center will be pop locking with the help of Dubs One spinning all the best hip-hop and R&B and the First Fridays spray crew providing the art on 3939 South.move-does-rumours
  • Goodwill is joining First Fridays to promote their new concept store, Edgar & James, which will take over the former Trader Joe’s building. This new concept is a high end curated store that carefully selects donated items.
  • Free Spirit Yoga will host an exhibit by artist, healer, and musician Christa Galactica.
  • Pop into the First Fridays Night Market at Bixby and Atlantic. The market features a farmers market, artisan crafters, and live music!
  • Stop by Jammin’ Music for their monthly student showcase and jam session!
  • FREE parking at the Bixby Business Center on the corner of Atlantic and San Antonio.
  • Special guest entertainment for the month: Billy Rose at Cartagena and Atlantic, Laura Wiley at Willmore Wine Bar, DJ Bix at The Allery, Sea Funk Brass Band at Aura Thai/Bella Pizza, Alyssandra Nighswonger at Society of Long Beach, Eric and the Giant Clams at Lola’s, Kelly Fitzgerald at EJ Malloys, Taylor Crawford at DRNK, DJ Phil at About U, and John Dean at Clover.
  • First Fridays favorites are back such as MOVE at Ground Control, Hedgehog Swing at Coffee Bean, kids-in-alleyLee Hansen at Goldhill Salon, The Funny Valentines at West Bistro, Joe Perez at Bake n Broil, and Hot Club at Georgie’s Place.
  • Get your vinyl fix with the Record Truck!

When the businesses start to close, “First Fridays After Hours” begins. Lola’s Mexican Restaurant, Weiland Brewery, Willmore, and EJ Malloy’s go late into the night with food, drinks, and music. Why go home early? Stay out late and continue the energy Dine on Art-Lantic Avenue at one of our tasty restaurants then grab the trolley that will transport you venue to venue from designated stops at the participating businesses
